ATMOSPHERIC OILS

Create a loose, hazy riverscape full of seasonal atmosphere, texture and movement

DATE: Sunday 15th November
TIME: 11am – 3pm
VENUE: Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine
MEDIUM: Watermixable Oils
COST: £95 – all materials included

This workshop is all aboutatmosphere.

We’ll be painting a loose, expressive riverscape on a30cm canvas, working wet-into-wet and using all sorts of wonderfully non-precious tools — rags, fingers, decorating brushes, squeegees and palette knives.

The aim is to create that hazy, slightly mistylate-autumn feeling where edges soften, colours merge and the landscape becomes more about mood than detail.

You can bring your own riverscape inspiration or reference images if you’d like to make the painting more personal, or simply follow my step-by-step demonstration.

We’ll build the painting in loose wet layers, creating depth and atmosphere first, then gradually introducing more energy and texture.

And yes, there will absolutely be some of my signatureferal foregrounds — but this time we’ll take them even looser and more intuitively abstract, using palette knives, scratches, drags and bold marks.

This is not about making a neat landscape.

It’s about creating a painting that feels atmospheric, expressive and alive.

What we’ll explore

We’ll look at how to:

  • create haze and distance without overworking
  • build depth using soft wet-into-wet layers
  • simplify a landscape into shape, colour and atmosphere
  • use unconventional tools to make more interesting marks
  • introduce texture with palette knife
  • loosen up foregrounds and let them become more intuitive and semi-abstract

Suitable for

This is ideal for anyone who has painted a little before and wants to becomelooser and more expressive with oils.

You do not need to be experienced or confident — and if you’ve been to one of my workshops before, you’ll recognise the emphasis on big marks, texture and not getting too precious.

If you prefer to be guided, follow my demo step by step.

If you’re more confident, bring your own reference and use the techniques to create your own atmospheric riverscape.

Everything is supplied, including your30cm canvas, paints and materials.
