This one is going to beall about play.

Inspired by one of my favourite paintings from a few years ago, Autumn Gold, we’ll be working small on a20cm pre-prepared cradle board, building a loose, semi-abstract landscape full of rich autumn colour, texture and unexpected marks.

Your board will already have someorganic material worked into the surface, giving you something completely individual to respond to from the minute you start painting.

No two boards will be quite the same — and no two finished paintings should be either.

We’ll work over a dark ground using watermixable oils, palette knives, scrapes, scratches and bold flashes of colour, allowing bits of the black surface and organic texture to appear and disappear as the painting develops.

Thinkinky darks, ochres, autumn golds, teal, rust, flashes of pink and light — with skeletal grasses and seedheads weaving their way through the landscape.

This is not about copying a landscape exactly.

It’s about responding to what’s already on your board, playing with colour and texture and letting something wonderfully loose emerge.

What we’ll explore

We’ll look at how to:

• work over a dark ground to make colour really sing
• use organic materials to create unexpected texture
• simplify a landscape into blocks of colour, light and dark
• scrape, drag and layer oils without getting precious
• use palette knives and other tools to make expressive marks
• bring in skeletal grasses and seedheads without painting every tiny detail
• know when to leave things alone rather than painting the life out of them

Suitable for

This is a lovely relaxed workshop forall levels.

You absolutely do not need to be an experienced painter - I’ll demonstrate and guide you through experiemental processes with plenty of room to go off-piste and respond to your board in your own way.

The whole point is that everyone’s painting will be different.

Materials

Everything is included, including your20cm pre-prepared cradle board, watermixable oils, tools and materials.

PLUS - you'll get an EXTRA mini cradleboard to experiment with alongside your main piece - creating a matching or alternative mini - two paintings in just a few hours!

Refreshments - morning tea/coffee and cake - will also be provided.

Come and spend a Saturday morning making a bit of a mess, playing with gorgeous autumn colour and seeing what happens when we let texture and paint do some of the heavy lifting.
